| posted: 28.04.2011 in News To arrange a marriage between a tank and a skateboard would be an impossible undertaking for most. Not for Benjamin Gulak, who
seems to have a taste for extreme vehicles (see engine 4/2010, News & Trends). Gulag took a pair of small caterpillar tracks powered by an 18 horsepower engine, added a skateboard deck and a handle to hold on to and came up with a more than fitting name for the contraption.
The Shredder shreds through all kinds of terrain, be it snow, sand, trails or the side of a mountain. At up to 50 kilometres per hour, the gnarly and robust off-road vehicle's range is only limited by its driver's capabilities. Demanding as it may be, riding a Shredder will certainly be soon at the top of every adrenalin junkie's wish list. http://bpg-werks.com | posted: 20.04.2011 in The Last Straw 1. It can't be done. 2. I knew it was a good idea all along! | posted: 10.04.2011 in News Bild: ©2010 Wind Power Limited and Grimshaw The UK is pushing a very ambitious offshore wind power strategy. The island is already surrounded by more than 330 wind power plants - a world record. The goal of installing 12 GW of offshore power by 2012 demands for larger and larger turbines. Which in turn means to balance larger and larger weights on taller and taller towers. To overcome this inherent design flaw of the common horizontal axis wind turbine, Wind Power Limited is working on a large-scale horizontal-axis solution and recently introduced their Aerogenerator X. The huge Darrieus rotor has a diameter of 275 metres from tip to tip and is rated for 10 Megawatts of power and possibly more. The elegant design concentrates the weight of the generator and the gearbox at the base for easy maintenance access. Only the relatively light blade structure stretches out in the wind. The installtion of a first prototype is scheduled for 2014. www.windpower.ltd.uk | posted: 20.03.2011 in News Two hands on a watch should be enough to tell the time. Not for the watchmakers at Urwerk: They added a third hand, each carrying an "hour satellite". These satellites consist of a cube showing the hour and a pointer indicating the minutes on a side scale. Once a satellite leaves the scale at the bottom, the cube is turned to show a new hour and the next satellite enters the scale at the top. Watchmakers like to speak of a 'complication' whenever they mean the fancy mechanics of a watch, but in this case the planetary drive of the satellites and the rotating hour-cubes more than live up to it. Truly a watch for the gearheads among us - even without mentioning the Titanium casing, the oil-change indicator and the twin turbines visible on the back of the watch. www.urwerk.com | posted: 15.03.2011 in The Last Straw Egbert der Ingenieur ist beruflich viel auf Reisen und tritt dabei immer wieder in Fettnäpfchen. Its construction on a submerged reef has been called one of the seven wonders of the industrial world and started the career of Robert Stevenson, whose family produced 97 lighthouses and one poet. | posted: 09.03.2011 in The Last Straw The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong, it usually turns out to be impossible to get at and repair. |
